Church of San Sebastiano
Paolo Veronese, (1528-1588)
1559, oil and gilding on wood
Conservation study in 2009 and in 2010 funded by the California Chapter of Save Venice Inc.
Veronese painted and decorated the organ loft of San Sebastiano between 1558 and 1560. He devised a special design for the organ casing, which was executed following his orders by Master Domenico da Treviso. Gilding and carvings were made by Francesco Fiorentino and Bartolomeo Bolognese. Veronese painted organ shutters depicting the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple when closed, and the Miracle of the Pool of Bethesda when opened. The organ loft partially covers wall frescoes Veronese finished in 1558, which leads some scholars to argue that the instrument was not part of the original plan for the church.
