Other islands

The historic center of Venice also encompasses smaller islands throughout the lagoon. North of Venice, Torcello remains the site of the earliest Venetian settlements. Murano is home to the famous glass factories, neighbored by the funerary island of San Michele. Just across the Bacino of San Marco, Palladio's church of San Giorgio Maggiore crowns the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Lido, the barrier island, protects Venice from the Adriatic Sea, and stretches southward to the island community of Chioggia.
