Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
The Lesser Friars of the Franciscan Order were given a plot of land in 1250 and completed the first church on that site in 1338. Two years later they began construction of the present, far larger building, completing it over the next 100 years in 1446. The high altar was subsequently dedicated in 1469.
This monumental building--one of Venice's three great Gothic churches--contains some of the greatest art treasures in Venice.
