Ferdinando Ongania published the book Calli e Canali in Venezia (Streets and Canals in Venice) and Isole della Laguna (Islands of the Lagoon) in 1893. Ongania compiled a permanent photographic record of life in Venice at that time. He worked with many photographers to capture the city and its people at all hours of the day, creating an important historical document. The Ongania Collection includes photos of buildings, churches, streets, and squares and often includes people and scenes of daily 19th-century life.
Save Venice is reconditioning, printing, and digitalizing 35 glass-plate negatives from the Ferdinando Ongania Collection. The negatives belong to the Superintendency of Monuments Photo Archives in Venice. Upon completion, the photos will become an important part of the Superintendency Photo Archives, where they will be available for study and consultation.
