Pietradura Tomb of the Contarini Family
Second half of the 16th century
(restoration and replacement of missing pieces, 1996,
sponsored by Lily Auchincloss)
Located in the central aisle, this pavement of inlaid stones bears the coat of arms of the Contarini family and is thus thought by many to mark the family's burial place. Many of the border tesserae (pieces of cut stone) were missing, but since the design was symmetrical and no two mirror-image pieces had been lost, restorers were able to recreate and replace all the missing pieces of the original design.
