Celebrating the Restoration of Tintoretto’s Paintings at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore

May 2026

Hundreds of enthusiastic attendees gathered at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore on Friday, May 8, to celebrate the inauguration of the restoration of Jacopo Tintoretto’s monumental canvases, the Last Supper and The Israelites in the Desert.

This transformative conservation project was made possible through the generous support of The Stracke Family and the collaborative efforts of expert conservators from CBC Conservazione Beni Culturali, art handlers from UniSVe, and representatives of the Venice branch of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore.

The evening featured remarks by Father Norberto Villa, Abbot-Emeritus of San Giorgio Maggiore; Frederick Ilchman, Chairman of Save Venice; Devis Valentini and Valeria Saccarola of the Venice branch of the Italian Ministry of Culture; and Carmelo A. Grasso, Director of the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore ETS.
