Restoring Vittore Carpaccio’s Narrative Cycle
September 2025
Save Venice’s conservation of Vittore Carpaccio’s narrative cycle in the Scuola Dalmata, begun in 2019, has progressed steadily, and seven of the ten canvases are now fully restored. The ground floor of the Scuola has been transformed: the two side walls now unfold in sequence with Carpaccio’s restored paintings, their luminous colors and renewed vibrancy creating a feast for the eyes.

Conservator Valentina Piovan completed the treatment of Carpaccio’s Triumph of Saint George in July. Scientific investigations using Infrared Reflectography (IR) led to the surprising discovery of the artist’s scribbled annotations in Venetian dialect indicating colors—“zalo” for yellow and “cremexin” for crimson. These annotations are likely by Carpaccio himself, meant as a reminder of his earlier decisions or guide his assistants in completing the painting. Piovan is now focusing her attention on the Baptism of the Selenites and the Virgin and Child altarpiece. The final painting in the series, Saint Tryphon and the Basilisk, is slated for treatment in 2026.
