The Venetia 1600: Births and Rebirths exhibition at Palazzo Ducale, a cornerstone of the celebrations of the 1600th anniversary of Venice’s legendary founding in 421, opened to the public on September 4, 2021 and runs through June 5. 2022.
Over the centuries Venice has faced countless moments of crisis and trial, yet the city has always managed to regenerate and revive itself. This exhibition offers an innovative reading of the history of the Serenissima based on the concept of “birth” and “rebirth” as inherently Venetian tendencies. Deciphering the past of Venice through its artistic treasures can help envision a more proactive and optimistic future for the city. The four co-curators are Save Venice Chairman Frederick Ilchman, independent scholar Robert Echols, former Save Venice Research Fellow Gabriele Matino, and Museo Correr director Andrea Bellieni, under the scientific direction of Musei Civici Director Gabriella Belli.
Save Venice is proud to honor this special moment in Venice’s history by funding the timely conservation of thirteen works of art that are featured in the show, thanks to the generous support of Jill and Richard Almeida, Prof. Patricia Fortini Brown, Susan and Carter Emerson, Mary Ellen Meehan, Alice Z. Pannill, the “Savio Benefator” Cultural Association in Memory of Cesare and Bice Vivante, the Young Friends of Save Venice, and Tina Walls and Friends. A further thirteen artworks restored with funding from Save Venice in past years are also included in the exhibition, for a total of 26 artworks conserved.
