Short Talks by Mardges Bacon, Peter Fergusson and Christopher Carlsmith

John McAndrew was a distinguished architectural historian who taught at Vassar College and Wellesley College for many years. He was curator of the Department of Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art from 1937 to 1941and later served in Mexico during World War II. In the early 1970s he was the founder and first chairman of Save Venice Inc.

Mardges Bacon is professor emerita at Northeastern University; her new book John McAndrew’s Modernist Vision: From the Vassar College Art Library to the Museum of Modern Art in New York (Princeton Architectural Press, 2018) explores McAndrew’s key role in redefining architectural modernism in the United States.

Peter Fergusson is professor emeritus at Wellesley College; he was McAndrew’s colleague and friend, and has been a member of Save Venice since its early years.

Christopher Carlsmith is professor at University of Massachusetts Lowell and is currently writing a book about the history of Save Venice Inc.
