Titian’s Annunciation: investigations, restoration, and discoveries
March 25, 2024 – June 2, 2024
Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice
Titian’s Annunciation was bequeathed to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in 1555, making it the first significant artwork to adorn the confraternity’s newly-built headquarters. Currently located above one of the archways on the landing of the Grand Staircase, the painting bears a complex history of critical reception and conservation challenges.
The recent conservation treatment funded by Save Venice with the generous support of Richard K. Riess has yielded remarkable insights into the painting’s intricate genesis. Initially conceived around 1520 under the influence of Giovanni Bellini, the painting remained incomplete for many years before Titian revisited it, subjecting it to a series of changes and ‘updates’ that ultimately brought it to completion.
Through this special exhibition, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Save Venice are sharing the extraordinary results of this conservation. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to not only learn about these recent discoveries but enjoy the exceptional possibility to view the painting up close before its definitive re-installation above the Grand Staircase.
