Save Venice Presents
Exploring Titian’s Assunta: A New Interactive Website
May 2025
Save Venice, the American non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the art and architecture of Venice, is proud to announce the publication of www.assunta.savevenice.org, a digital platform dedicated to Titian’s monumental Assumption of the Virgin in the Basilica dei Frari (1516–1518), also known as the Assunta, housed in the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. The website will be presented to the public virtually on Monday, May 19, 2025.
This previously unpublished visual archive documents Save Venice’s ambitious 2018–2022 conservation of Titian’s altarpiece, undertaken by Giulio Bono, along with the restoration of its monumental frame by Egidio Arlango. It features a treasure trove of macro photography from photographer Matteo De Fina and Infrared reflectograms captured by Davide Bussolari and Claudia Daffara. Created with generous funding from Claudia and Ferigo Foscari, the interactive website was designed by Girardi Studio, developed by Iperstudio, and has been published with permission from the Ufficio Beni Culturali del Patriarcato di Venezia.
Designed to captivate the general public, educators, and art lovers alike, the website allows users to explore the Assunta and its recent restoration like never before. The before-and-after comparisons reveal the brilliance of Titian’s restored colors, and infrared reflectograms uncover the artist’s original underdrawings and compositional adjustments. A gallery of extreme close-ups examine Titian’s brushwork intimately, offering a rare glimpse into the techniques that shaped this Renaissance masterpiece.
The conservation of the Assunta and its stone frame, initiated in 2018 to mark its 500th anniversary, was made possible through the generous support of Beatrice de Santo Domingo and the Jasmine Charity Trust, in honor of Regina Jaglom Wachter.
By bringing the splendor of this Renaissance masterpiece to a global audience, www.assunta.savevenice.org ensures the preservation of Titian’s legacy continues to inspire awe and admiration for years to come.
