Conservation funded by an anonymous donor in honor of Jennifer Fletcher.
This large group portrait depicting Saint Justina and the Treasurers was painted in 1580 for the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, Venice’s treasury building; it was commissioned by treasurers Marco Giustinian, Angelo Morosini, and Alessandro Badoer, who are depicted together with two secretaries and a clerk. The female figure represents Saint Justina, an early Christian martyr from the nearby mainland city of Padua. She was likely painted by Jacopo’s son Domenico Tintoretto, who was twenty years old at the time and active in his father’s workshop.
Today this work is the most prominent painting by Tintoretto on view in the Museo Correr, the civic museum dedicated to the art and history of Venice.
During the restoration, conservators from the COREST firm removed the overpainting that had obscured Saint Justina’s facial features, retouched and consolidated losses, removed the discolored varnish that had obscured the richness of the pigments, and replaced it with a new protective coat of transparent varnish.
For select projects, conservation dossiers in Italian containing limited textual and photographic documentation may be available for consultation by appointment at the Venice office of Save Venice and the Rosand Library & Study Center. For inquiries, please contact us at venice@savevenice.org.
